Sub-Saharan Africa

Almost 19% of all reprisals documented in the Secretary General reports since 2010 are in Sub-Saharan Africa.

South Sudan, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are the three countries in the region where most acts of intimidation and reprisals have been specifically recorded.

The cases are predominantly against named and unnamed individuals and organisations working to defend civil and political rights and accountability and impunity. The main types of reprisals observed in the region are threats and intimidation, detention/imprisonment and physical attacks.
