Mr. Mustapha Bendjamaa, journalist and representative of the Ligue Algérienne des
Droits de l’Homme, faced criminal charges in connection with his engagement with OHCHR
during its technical cooperation mission to Algeria, which took place in November 2022.

Special procedure mandate holders addressed allegations of the arbitrary detention of
Mr. Ahmed Manseri and of the intimidation and surveillance of Mr. Malik Riahi, Mr. Qasim
Saeed and Ms. Chahrazad Ben Fryawa following their meetings with the Special Rapporteur
on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association during his official visit to
Algeria in September 2023.33

Between November and December 2023, 38 human rights defenders, political
activists and media personnel reportedly received threatening calls from security agencies
following their engagement with United Nations representatives.

During the period before the national elections of January 2024, civil society actors
discontinued visible interactions with the United Nations, resorted to self-censorship or
declined to attend meetings with United Nations officials due to fear of increased reprisals.
Names and details of those concerned are withheld due to fear of reprisals for their
cooperation with the United Nations.
