Between November and December 2023, 38 human rights defenders, political activists and media personnel reportedly received threatening calls from security agencies following their engagement with United Nations representatives. 49. During the period before the national elections of January 2024, civil society actors discontinued visible interactions with the United Nations, resorted to self-censorship or declined to attend meetings with United Nations officials due to fear of increased reprisals.
